My 2 Cents: I'll Be Dipped

The first in a series, My 2 Cents focuses on random tidbits of information pertinent to what we are doing, contemplating, experiencing, or working on right now… here’s my 2 cents (for what it’s worth)...

1.) Ice Cream: I don’t know if it’s the time of year, or the fact that on a gluten free diet the only exciting thing to eat is ice cream, but I have been obsessed with soft vanilla ice cream in a dish. I have become a connoisseur as they say; I will pay more for Carvel because they are the best, and they take credit card. What I can’t understand, is why so many ice cream places are cash only… don’t people know you will buy more and shop more often when you can simply swipe your card?  My thoughts are affirmed with the article from Investopedia, A Plastic Paradise”, (a title I am quite fond of). Their number one reason for carrying cash, cha-ching: overpaying (which I would equate to overbuying, because I always have my coupons handy)! Suffice it to say, thankfully, I rarely carry cash, which has been my only saving grace against sheer ice cream driven obesity.

2.) The Dip: Spun, possibly, from my current obsession with ice cream, I reached for Seth Godin’s book “The Dip”. I admit I have not read it yet, but tend to buy all his books to have on hand and read when I need a pick-me-up. Having read “The Purple Cow,” “Meatball Sundae,” and “All Marketers are Liars” (several times), “The Dip’s” mantra is learning “when to quit and when to stick it out.” So fitting to have opened this book when I did, because there it was… “I feel like giving up.”

It does continue on to say not all the time, but I could empathize with him. “If you’re the kind of high-achieving, goal-oriented person who finds HERSELF reading a book like this, you’re probably used to running into obstacles.” It hit me, I am that person!  So I will leave you with Seth’s insight: quit the wrong stuff, stick with the right stuff, have the guts to do one or the other (I should point out here, I did not give away all the answers, as I’m sure Seth would disapprove, so here is my plug to buy the book for yourself).

So I took this advice and I quit complaining, I quit waiting, I quit cutting back, and I put a plan together to put my focus back on the right stuff, and what-do-you-know, it was accepted.

What will you quit today so you can continue to be/do/have/get the best?

Note: I’ll Be Dipped used to be the name of a very popular ice cream shop in my neighborhood which I always thought was such a creative name. Although the ice cream shop is still there, the name is far less appealing.
